Originally named The Rudies, began when a young high school teacher, Tom Voris of San Marcos High School in San Diego, put together a ska band together with his students to play at local school events. Little did he know that his love of ska and helping students would lead the band into the local and beyond music scene.
The Fabulous Rudies are often referred to as a cross between Sublime and No Doubt. This eclectic nine-piece outfit has been burning up the SoCal club scene off and on for the last 27 years and has received national media attention through regular and college radio, television and film, the Internet, and trade magazines. In 1998, Music Connection Magazine touted the group as one of the Top 100 unsigned bands claiming, “...any major or indie label would be doing themselves a favor by checking out this young energetic band.” Guy Defazio Music came calling first to offer the fabulous ones distribution in Europe and song placement in the upcoming film, American Pie. As did Infiniti Records (IMG), in Japan to distribute their San Diego award winning CD, Rudies Rarities… The band also recorded The Brady Bunch Song that was to be used in the new Brady Bunch Movie. They also placed songs (Keep on Movin’ and Rearrange) on the Disney Channel for the show, In A Heartbeat, where the rudies opened for Don Ho’s daughter, Hoku, in that episode. The Fabulous Rudies also placed Rearrange in the highly acclaimed Indie Film, The Last Big Attraction, and songs Keep On Movin’ and American Dream in the Independent Movie, The Month of August. With all these successes, the band would self-destruct going into the new century, the year 2000.
Founder, Tom Voris (Tommy2Rude) and trombonist Don Carter (would take on a leadership role), picked up the pieces and with major line-up changes would carry the torch of SKA Music into the next decade plus, becoming a regular participant in Kevin Lyman’s Vans Warped Tour. The final phase would be led by Tom’s own daughter in 2010 to front the band, creating their greatest recorded material called Labor of Lust, touring the Warped Tour one last time.
Now there is a Major Motion Picture in the works about the beginnings of this San Diego Ska band. The Movie: The Fabulous Rudies promises a skankin’ good time as a teacher attempts to investigate his checkered past of music and motivate his students to look beyond the classroom walls in a high school backdrop and ride the SoCal wave of authentic ska music of the ‘90’s! The Rudies are back! The Fabulous Rudies are performing again regularly and recording NEW material. They just completed one of their favorite covers they perform, A Message to You, Rudie and an original reggae song written by saxophonist, Aaron Hudson, titled How Can You Save The World (featuring Alana “Holy Rainbow Club” with Obed Padilla) and Produced by Original Wailer & Roots Covenant founder, AK Cisneros and rudie, Don Carter). How Can You Save The World shot up to the #1 downloaded Reggae song on Amazon Music and #8 on Apple Music upon its release. More songs to be released as the rudies story is being converted to script. Listen to these NEW recordings and all The Fabulous Rudies tracks on your favorite streaming platforms.
